    Indicative Ride Options

The objective is to tailor the ride to suit you

so the routes can be modified in the planning or on the go.

    Purau/Port Levy – 160k or 85k

depending on whether it is a ride out and back from Rangiora or a drive through the city to start.

The route into and through Christchurch has some flat countryside and city riding until we climb Dyers Pass (330M) to the Summit Road. We follow the crater rim of the Lyttelton Harbour with spectacular views to the Southern Alps before dropping down to Gebbies Pass (a stretch of road known as ‘The Bastard’ in the up-hill direction).  From the top of Gebbies we descend to sea level and follow the harbour bays to Purau.  From there it is back up the hill to the café at Diamond Harbour for replenishments.  The way home is back around the harbour bays taking the low road through Governors Bay instead of the summit.  This route makes the climb up Dyers Pass from Governors Bay inevitable (a reasonably tough 320M climb) and then an hour flat ride back to Rangiora.  There are a number of possible deviations around this route so we can extend or shorten the ride.

Akaroa – 70 – 100  â€“ 130k can be a one-way ride from Christchurch (100k) with some demanding climbs and truly spectacular scenery or a loop by driving to Little River Township to start (70k with no flat riding).  The one-way route follows the ‘le race’ event course from the city up Dyers Pass taking the crater Summit Road and dropping down to the top of Gebbies Pass. It then follows a flat ride around the edge of Lake Ellesmere to Little River Township and after that there is the steady climb up to the Hilltop.  The views along the Summit Road toward the Akaroa Harbour on one side and the many bays out to the open sea on the other side make the occasional stop to take it in mandatory.  It is a steep drop down into Akaroa with some tight turns approaching the town.

Akaroa is a must visit destination http://www.akaroa.com .

If after looking around Akaroa you have not had enough riding for the day, you can ride the low road back around the Harbour and over the Hilltop to enjoy the fast sweeping drop back down into Little River.  This adds around 30k with some serious climbing to ensure that you do not end the day with the thought you could have done a bit more.

Rangiora - Ashley Gorge return – 70k out and back on an excellent cycling road with virtually no traffic with some short steep climbs through farmland.  It is a two hour plus workout, or a little longer if you add on one of the small deviations available.

Rangiora - White Rock return – 40k provides you with a taste of cycling in North Canterbury and can be treated as a short hard ride or cruise along taking in the atmosphere.

Rangiora - Coopers Creek return –100k you may not remember the destination but the route crossing the braided Ashley River following the edge of the hills to Ashley Gorge, presents marvellous views of the snow-capped Southern Alps.  This route has a general incline with some short steep climbs and a gentle climb to the rural village of Oxford.  From Oxford we can add on the loop out to Coopers Creek stopping for coffee back in Oxford to decide on the route back to Rangiora.  The choice is via Summer Hill or it works fine to retrace our steps back over the Ashley Gorge.

Waipara – Kate valley - Waikari -130k  flat riding with options to include some climbs leading to great look out spots across to the Southern Alps.

Hanmer – 110k (one way) is a great ride with wonderful scenery and a soothing soak in the hot pools at the end.  This takes up a full day, riding to Hanmer in the morning, lunch and taking in Hanmers offerings of hot pools and forest walks as you wish before we bring you back to Rangiora in time for dinner.

Rider Numbers – as the ride is tailored to suit you personally it does put a limit the number of people.  One to four is good with the occasional wait at the top of a significant climb to cater to the range of rider speed.

    Booking/cost

The ride is selected to suit your preference for climbing or rolling country roads and the weather may influence our decision, so the route may well change following a discussion on the day. However, selecting a ride when you book does provide me with an indication of your expectations.

The one-way ride out to Hanmer or to Akaroa requires a pick up for the journey home and the additional cost for this is - $50 each for 2-4 riders and $80 for one.

Rides on Banks Peninsular have the option of missing out the flat city section to have more time on the hills.  This requires transport to and from the start/finish point at a cost of $30 each for 2-4 riders or $40 for one.

    Ride including Bike hire

    Shorter   up to -80k  $90.00

    Longer  80-150k  $120.00

Accommodation – If you are staying in Christchurch City we can arrange to pick you up for rides on Banks Peninsula and adjust the bike to fit you.  However we do operate a B&B in Rangiora so if you are staying with us the bike can be set up to fit you in advance.
